About Zona Arqueológica de Calakmul

Calakmul lies in the middle of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, about 35 km from the Guatemala border. The Maya city, formerly called Ox Te' Tuun, was the capital of the Snake kingdom, which contested Tikal for dominance of the Maya lowlands between the 6th and 8th centuries. It is a UNESCO mixed site, both cultural and natural.

The site contains thousands of structures spread through the jungle, most still covered by vegetation. Structure II, one of the largest Maya pyramids, is about 45 meters tall and was expanded several times over centuries. From the top, when climbing is allowed, you can see the forest canopy to the horizon and, in the distance, the tops of other pyramids, including El Mirador, already in Guatemala.

Calakmul has more stelae than any other Maya site, many worn by time. Mosaic jade masks were found in tombs and are displayed at the San Miguel fortress in Campeche.

The reserve protects one of the largest areas of tropical forest in Mexico, with jaguars, spider monkeys, howler monkeys, toucans and wild turkeys, which often appear on the access road and on the trails between the ruins.
