About Zona Arqueológica de Kohunlich
Kohunlich is about 65 km west of Chetumal, in a jungle area with corozo palms, near the border with Campeche. It was inhabited roughly between 200 BC and 1200 and reached its peak between 500 and 800.
The best-known building is the Temple of the Masks, a pyramid whose stairway is flanked by large stucco faces about 2 meters high, made around the 6th century. The faces, with eyes and symbolic ornaments, would represent the sun god or city rulers. A thatched roof protects them from the rain.
The site also includes the Plaza of the Stelae, the Acropolis, the ballcourt and residential groups, spread through the forest and connected by trails. The Maya of Kohunlich built a system of reservoirs to collect rainwater.
Being off the main routes, the site is usually quiet, with many birds and sometimes monkeys.
