About Cenote Azul
The Cenote Azul is about 3 km south of the village of Bacalar, next to the federal highway and separated from the lagoon by a narrow strip of land. It is one of the largest open cenotes on the Yucatán Peninsula, about 200 meters in diameter and roughly 90 meters deep.
The water is fresh, clear near the shore and dark blue in the middle because of the depth. The edges are lined with trees and plants that hang over the water, and there are platforms and steps for entering.
On the shore there is a restaurant with a terrace over the cenote, from which you can swim directly into the water. Because of the depth, a life jacket is recommended.
There is an entrance fee, and ordinary sunscreen is not welcome in the water.
