About Templo de Santa Prisca
The church of Santa Prisca and San Sebastián stands on Plaza Borda in central Taxco. It was built between 1751 and 1758 by order of José de la Borda, a miner who grew wealthy from the region’s silver, and is considered one of the most complete examples of churrigueresque baroque in Mexico.
The façade, of pinkish stone, is flanked by two tall towers and decorated with reliefs of saints, columns and ornaments. The dome is covered with yellow and blue tiles.
The interior houses twelve carved wooden altarpieces covered with gold leaf, featuring hundreds of figures of saints, angels and flowers. The sacristy contains paintings by the colonial artist Miguel Cabrera.
The church remains in use and is the focal point of Taxco’s festivals, such as the Holy Week processions.
