About Grutas de Cacahuamilpa
The Cacahuamilpa caves are located in the Grutas de Cacahuamilpa National Park, about 30 km north of Taxco, on the border with the State of Mexico. They form one of the country’s largest cave systems, carved into limestone by underground rivers over millions of years.
The main tour covers about 2 km of a dry gallery along an illuminated path, passing through some 20 chambers. Some reach about 80 meters high, with stalactites, stalagmites and columns in varied shapes, which guides liken to figures and name things like the Throne and the Cathedral.
Beneath the caves run the underground rivers San Jerónimo and Chontalcoatlán, which join and emerge from the mountain. A trail descends to the point where the river exits the rock, called Dos Bocas.
Visits are conducted with park guides, in groups, at fixed times.
