About Prédios do Governo (Government Buildings)
The Government Buildings are on Victoria Parade in central Suva, facing Ratu Sukuna Park and the bay. The complex was completed in 1939 in the Art Deco style to house the British colonial administration, and it is one of the capital’s best-known buildings.
The light stone façade, the clock tower and the columns at the main entrance define the avenue’s streetscape. For decades the building hosted parliament and the main government bodies, and it still houses state institutions such as the courts.
Visits are made from the outside, on a walk along Victoria Parade, which also passes the Grand Pacific Hotel (1914), the old town hall and Thurston Gardens, home to the Fiji Museum.
In front of the building stands a statue of Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna, one of the leaders who prepared the country for independence.
