About Museu de Fiji (Fiji Museum)
The Fiji Museum is located in Thurston Gardens, in central Suva, a short walk from Victoria Parade. It was founded in 1904 and has occupied the present building since 1955, expanded over the years. It is the country's main museum and houses the largest collection of objects related to Fiji's history and cultures.
The most striking piece is the drua Ratu Finau, a double war canoe from 1913 over 13 meters long, recalling the large canoes used for travel and warfare between islands. The collection also includes Lapita pottery and pieces from later periods, clubs and spears, combs, kava bowls and objects associated with ancient rituals.
Other galleries cover the arrival of Europeans, missionaries and indentured Indian workers. Among the well-known items are the rudder of the ship Bounty, found on Pitcairn, and the sole of missionary Thomas Baker's shoe, who was killed inland on Viti Levu in 1867.
Thurston Gardens, surrounding the museum, are a small botanical garden with tropical trees, a bandstand and a clock tower, good for a shady break.
