About Mercado Municipal de Suva (Suva Municipal Market)
Suva's municipal market lies between Usher Street and Stinson Parade, next to the port and the bus terminal. It is Fiji's largest market and brings together producers from Viti Levu and other islands, who arrive by bus and boat with fruit, vegetables, roots and fish.
The ground floor is occupied by stalls of tropical fruits, vegetables, cassava, taro, coconut and chili peppers, arranged in heaps. There is a large kava section where the root is sold in bunches or ground, and a fish and seafood section near the pier.
On the upper floor are stalls for spices, handicrafts and prepared food, offering curry, roti and Fijian dishes. The market is one of the places where you can see the everyday mixture of Fiji's peoples.
Activity is greatest on Saturday morning, when producers from across the country arrive; the market is closed on Sunday.
