About Catedral do Sagrado Coração (Sacred Heart Cathedral)
The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart is on Pratt Street in central Suva and is the seat of the city’s Catholic archdiocese. It was completed in 1902 using sandstone blocks brought from Sydney, Australia, and is one of the oldest and most prominent buildings in the centre.
The façade features two towers and arched windows, and the interior, with a high, simple nave, is lit by stained glass. The cathedral is an active church, with masses throughout the week.
Sunday masses, sung in Fijian and English, are one of the most memorable experiences for visitors to Suva: community choirs fill the nave with multi-voice hymns, a tradition found in churches across the country.
A visit pairs well with a walk through the centre, between Victoria Parade, the market and Thurston Gardens.
