About Templo Sri Siva Subramaniya (Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple)
The Sri Siva Subramaniya temple is at the southern end of Nadi’s main street, near the Nadi River. It is the largest Hindu temple in the Southern Hemisphere and the religious centre for one of the country’s largest Indo-Fijian communities, descendants of labourers brought from India to the sugarcane fields from the late 19th century.
The present temple was consecrated in 1994, replacing an older temple where the Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam association—formed in 1926—now maintains it. It was built in the Dravidian style of southern India, following the principles of Vedic sacred architecture, by artisans from Tamil Nadu.
The tiered towers are covered with painted sculptures of gods, kings and warriors, and the courtyard contains shrines dedicated to Murugan, Shiva and Ganesh. The temple is an active place of worship, with ceremonies and religious festivals throughout the year, when the courtyard fills with families and offerings of flowers and fruit.
A visit is quick and easy to fit into your first or last day in Nadi. Visitors should respect temple rules: clothing that covers shoulders and legs, shoes left outside and silence in prayer areas. There is an admission charge for tourists; check at the gate.
