About Jardim do Gigante Adormecido (Garden of the Sleeping Giant)

The Garden of the Sleeping Giant is in the Sabeto Valley, north of Nadi, at the foot of the Nausori Highlands. The name comes from the mountain behind the garden, whose profile resembles a lying man. The garden was created in 1977 by American actor Raymond Burr, who lived in Fiji, to house his private orchid collection.

Today it covers about 20 hectares with more than 2,000 varieties of orchids, both hybrids and species native to Fiji, as well as palms, gingers and rainforest trees. Covered wooden walkways run through the beds, pass a waterlily pond and enter a stretch of native forest at the foot of the mountain.

The orchids bloom year-round, and the peak flowering periods are usually June–July and November–December. At reception the visit typically starts with a short introduction about the garden, and guides are available for those who want to learn the plant names.

The garden pairs well with the Sabeto mud pools a few minutes away, and the two are often combined on half-day tours from Nadi and Denarau.
