About Mercado Municipal de Lautoka (Lautoka Municipal Market)

The Lautoka municipal market is in the city centre, a few blocks from Vitogo Avenue. It is one of the largest in Fiji, second only to Suva, and supplies the sugarcane region of western Viti Levu. Fijian and Indo‑Fijian vendors fill the stalls with seasonal fruits, vegetables, cassava, taro, coconut and chilies.

One section of the market is dedicated to kava (yaqona), the root used in the ceremonial drink of the villages, sold in bunches or already powdered. This is where many visitors buy a kava bundle to take as a gift (sevusevu) when visiting a village with a guide.

There are also stalls selling spices and Indo‑Fijian sweets, fish and some crafts, such as woven baskets. The market is busiest in the morning and on Saturdays, when producers from the villages arrive.

The market is a good introduction to everyday life in Fiji, away from the resorts, and pairs well with a walk through the town centre and along the seafront.
