About Vila de Lovoni (Lovoni Village)

Lovoni lies in the center of Ovalau, within the crater of an extinct volcano, surrounded by forested slopes. It is the best-known village in the island's interior and the home of a people who, in the 19th century, long resisted the rule of the chiefs of Bau and the settlers of Levuka.

Lovoni's history is told by its inhabitants: the village warriors attacked Levuka several times until they were defeated and taken as laborers to other islands in the 1870s. Part of the population later returned to the crater, where the village remains to this day.

The visit is organized with a guide from Levuka and begins with the sevusevu, the kava offering ceremony to the chief. Afterwards, residents typically show visitors around the village, tell the people's history and accompany a short walk through the forest and along the river.

The road to Lovoni, a dirt track, climbs the island's slope and offers views of the forest and coast. As in any Fijian village, visits require clothing that covers shoulders and knees and respect for local customs.
