About Beach Street (Beach Street)
Beach Street runs along the port of Levuka, between the sea and the hillside, and is the center of the town that was Fiji's first capital. The wooden and masonry façades, with verandas and painted signs, are largely from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when Levuka was the country's main trading port.
At its busiest, the street housed warehouses, banks, hotels and dozens of bars frequented by sailors, traders and planters. Many of those buildings still stand, occupied by shops, offices and homes, giving the street the look of a town frozen in time.
The ensemble was the main reason for Levuka's inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013, as an example of a colonial Pacific port town where European buildings coexist with Fijian villages.
The walk along the street also leads to side streets and stairways that climb the hillside, such as the 199-step staircase, up to old houses and viewpoints over the port and the sea.
