About Lagoa Azul (Blue Lagoon)
The Blue Lagoon is the sheltered cove between Nanuya Lailai and Nanuya Levu in the northern Yasawa. The water is usually calm and clear, with shades ranging from green to blue depending on depth, over a white-sand bottom and patches of coral.
The name comes from the 1980 film The Blue Lagoon, filmed on the neighboring island of Nanuya Levu, and the cove has been called that ever since. It is one of Fiji’s most iconic images and serves as an anchorage for yachts touring the islands.
The lagoon is a protected fishing area, which helps preserve fish and coral. Snorkeling is done from Nanuya Lailai’s beach, swimming out to the reefs, and there are kayak and boat trips around the cove.
Nanuya Levu is occupied by a private resort, and access to that island is restricted to guests. The lagoon, Nanuya Lailai beach and the surrounding reefs are open to visitors staying at nearby lodges and to tour boats.
