About Ilha de Monuriki (Monuriki)
Monuriki is a small uninhabited island at the northern end of the Mamanuca group, with a rocky hill covered in low vegetation, a white-sand beach and a shallow clear-water lagoon. It became world-famous as the island where the scenes for Cast Away were filmed, the 2000 movie in which the character spends years alone on a Pacific island.
The island traditionally belongs to the people of Yanuya, the neighboring village, who look after it. Since 2011, Monuriki has been undergoing a program to restore native vegetation and protect the Fiji crested iguana, a rare species that lives on the western islands of the country.
Tours arrive by boat, land on the beach and allow time to walk the sand, swim and snorkel in the lagoon. Many visitors recreate scenes from the film, with the volleyball and words written in the sand.
Because the island is under the guardianship of the people of Yanuya, boats usually stop first at the village for the arrival ceremony (sevusevu), or carry a village representative. There are no facilities on the island, and everything taken there must return on the boat.
