A region to enjoy
at your own pace.

San Francisco concentrates neighborhoods of hills, rail-based transport and the bay landscape. The Golden Gate frames part of the outer circuit, while Alcatraz requires a boat reservation and museums ask for a pause inside the galleries.

Sausalito allows you to view the city from the opposite shore, with the option of crossing by ferry. Muir Woods adds a stand of sequoias, but parking and transport need to be reserved according to operations. It is not an improvised stop after the bridge.

Napa and Sonoma form an inland stage, with vineyard scenery and mission history. Tastings are cultural activities with their own scheduling; arrange a driver or a booked tour when wine is involved. In town, bay chill and wind can appear even in summer months.

Before you go

Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

September to October usually have mild days in the bay; April to June also work. Summer can bring fog and wind. From November to March it tends to rain more; the vineyard landscape changes with the season.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

How many days to stay

Six to eight days: four in the city and bay and two or three for the inland area and Muir Woods.

Which city to stay in

Union Square and areas near transit make the urban visit easier; Fisherman’s Wharf serves the waterfront. Napa and Sonoma justify a separate base to avoid returning to the bay after each outing.

Respect the place

Take your trash with you, follow the signs and support local businesses. In natural areas, follow the visiting guidelines.
