Get to know the place
Redwood brings together national and state areas that protect coastal sequoia forests in northern California. The groves are separated by roads, rivers and coastal sectors; there isn’t a single gate that combines all the routes.
Crescent City serves the Jedediah Smith sector and the northern coast, while Orick is near Prairie Creek and the accesses to Lady Bird Johnson Grove and Fern Canyon. Trail choices should match available time, rainfall and reservation requirements.
The trees are best appreciated on walks with pauses, observing trunks and the forest structure. Mist and humidity are part of the setting, and the coast is often cool even in summer. Some roads are narrow and unpaved; larger vehicles may have restrictions that need to be checked before traveling.
