The city
Pilgrim's Rest is a gold rush village in a narrow valley about 15 km from Graskop. Alluvial gold was found in the creek in 1873, and the village grew with corrugated iron and wooden houses. Mining ended in 1972, and the site was preserved as an open-air museum, with the old print shop, the pharmacy, the church, the miners' cemetery and the gold workings at the Diggings Museum.
