About Represa de Mankwe
The Mankwe dam fills the floor of Pilanesberg’s central valley, in the middle of the old crater. It is the park’s largest body of water and attracts animals of all kinds, especially in the dry season when the rest of the landscape runs short of water.
On the shoreline there are wooden hides, covered and linked to the parking area by fenced walkways, where you may step out of your vehicle. From there, quietly, it is common to see hippos, crocodiles, herons, kingfishers and fish eagles, as well as elephants, zebras and antelopes coming down to drink.
The Mankwe hide is the best known, and there are other viewing points at the park’s smaller dams. Near the reservoir, the tracks of the central valley are often good for looking for rhinos.
It’s a good place for a break during a safari, when animals rest and water birds remain active.
