About Summerstrand Beachfront
The Gqeberha waterfront runs along Marine Drive, between the port and the Summerstrand neighborhood, facing Algoa Bay. Because the bay faces east and is sheltered, the sea is usually calmer and the water warmer than on the Atlantic coast.
Kings Beach, the one closest to downtown, is long and has lifeguards in season. Hobie Beach, further south, features the Shark Rock stone pier and is a hub for sailing sports. Between them, a promenade links restaurants, parks and picnic areas.
Further on, Pollok Beach is popular with surfers and has natural rock pools at low tide.
Dolphins are commonly seen in the bay, and from June to November whales often pass close to the shore.
