About KZN Sharks Board
The KwaZulu‑Natal Sharks Board is the public body responsible for protecting swimmers on the province’s beaches. Since the 1950s it has installed and maintained nets and other equipment on dozens of beaches along the coast, and it studies sharks and other marine animals in the region.
The headquarters, on Umhlanga’s high ground, welcomes visitors for a presentation with video and a shark dissection, during which a researcher shows the animal’s anatomy and explains the coastal species, such as the bull shark and the tiger shark. An exhibition displays jaws, replicas and the history of the net work.
On some days boats depart from Durban harbour to accompany the team during net maintenance, with the chance to see dolphins and whales in season.
The visit helps understand the local sea and is popular with families with children.
