About Jardim Botânico de Durban

The Durban Botanic Garden was established in 1849 as a testing garden for agricultural plants, to see what could be grown in the new Natal colony. Over time it became a recreational and collection garden, covering about 15 hectares on the slope of the Berea neighborhood above the city centre.

The garden is known for its cycad collection, ancient plants similar to palms, including a specimen of Encephalartos woodii, a species that no longer exists in the wild. There is also a palm avenue, an orchid house, an herb garden and a sensory garden.

In the centre, a lake with waterfowl is surrounded by lawns, and on weekends the garden welcomes families, picnics and outdoor concerts. Large fig trees and tropical trees shade the paths.

It’s a peaceful stroll for the hottest hours of the day, away from the waterfront.
