About Golden Mile
The Golden Mile is the name given to Durban’s seafront, which runs from uShaka Beach, near the port, to the Umgeni River lagoon in the north. It is about 6 km of wide promenade, with a bike lane, benches, children’s pools and kiosks, used by locals and visitors from morning until night.
Along the seafront, a series of beaches such as North Beach, Bay of Plenty and South Beach have lifeguards and shark‑protection nets. Stone and concrete piers extend into the sea at regular intervals and serve as fishing spots and vantage points for watching surfers: Durban is one of the country’s surf capitals.
The water is warm year‑round, warmed by the Agulhas Current, and in winter it’s common to see dolphins near the break. In June and July the sardine run often brings schools of fish, dolphins and birds close to shore.
At the southern end is the uShaka complex, and at the northern end is Moses Mabhida Stadium, a few minutes from the promenade.
