About Thompson's Bay

Thompson's Bay is a small cove on the south side of Ballito, sheltered by dark rocks that jut into the sea. What it is known for is the tidal pool, a basin built among the rocks that fills with seawater and where you can swim without the strong Indian Ocean waves.

The beach has fine sand, lifeguards in season and a shaded lawn near the parking area. At low tide, the pools between the rocks reveal fish, urchins and starfish, and children spend hours watching them.

From there the Ballito waterfront promenade departs, heading north along the rocks and beaches toward the town center.

In winter, from June to November, it’s common to see humpback whales passing offshore, and dolphins frequently appear near the break.
