About Afrikaans Language Monument

The Afrikaans Language Monument (Afrikaanse Taalmonument) was inaugurated on 10 October 1975 on the Paarl mountain slope. It commemorates the 50th anniversary of Afrikaans being recognized as an official language, separate from Dutch, and the 100th anniversary of the society founded in Paarl in 1875 to promote the written language.

Architect Jan van Wijk’s design uses columns and curved concrete forms that taper upward. Each part has meaning: European influence, African languages, the bridge between the two continents, the Cape Malay language, and the language itself, represented by the tallest tower.

Afrikaans developed from the Dutch spoken at the Cape, mixed with the languages of the khoikhoi, enslaved people from Asia and Africa, and settlers of other origins. The earliest Afrikaans texts were written in the Arabic script by Cape Muslims.

From the monument terrace you can see the Berg River valley, the farms and, on a clear day, Table Mountain on the horizon. A short trail passes the surrounding granite domes.
