About Franschhoek Pass
The Franschhoek Pass is the road that leaves the bottom of the Franschhoek valley and climbs the mountains toward Villiersdorp and the Theewaterskloof reservoir. The route follows an old track used by elephants and later by settlers, and the current road was opened in the 19th century and paved in the 20th.
The ascent has tight hairpin bends cut into the slope, with low stone walls and views across the whole valley. From the viewpoint at the top you can see the village, the main street, the Huguenot Monument and the vineyards laid out in blocks up to the mountains on the far side.
Along the way there are seasonal waterfalls and fynbos on the slopes, with proteas at certain times. Baboons often appear at the roadside.
The pass is also an alternative route for those travelling from Franschhoek to Hermanus, via Villiersdorp and the Elgin valley.
