Baden
Baden lies south of Vienna and is part of Europe's great spa-city heritage. The Beethovenhaus and the Kurpark explain its connections to music, rest seasons and walking excursions. The center allows a day visit without turning the trip into long transfers.

Dürnstein
Dürnstein features the blue tower of its abbey and castle ruins on the Danube slope. The small center fits into a walk, but the climb to the Burgruine requires time and effort. The town is part of the Wachau and can be visited from Krems.

Krems an der Donau
Krems an der Donau marks the eastern entrance to the Wachau. The old town and Stein connect to the vineyards and the Danube. The Kunstmeile adds museums, while Göttweig offers an abbey visit on the opposite bank and on higher ground.

Melk
Melk is organized below its baroque abbey, at the western end of the Wachau. Visiting Stift Melk takes up a significant part of the day, with a walk through the lower town before or after the interiors. The railway station makes it easy to combine the visit with the Vienna and Sankt Pölten corridor.

Petronell-Carnuntum
Petronell-Carnuntum is the base for visiting Römerstadt Carnuntum, alongside the ancient Roman Danube frontier. The reconstructed quarter translates excavations into houses and bathhouses with visitable volumes and spaces. The town lies east of Vienna, in Lower Austria.

Semmering
Semmering is a base for the mountain railway region south of Vienna. The Semmeringbahn brings together viaducts and tunnels along a historic route, visible both from the train and from observation paths. The locality allows you to devote a full day to the railway, rather than treating it merely as a transit point.
