Hof
Hof is a small rural base in the southern sector of Vatnajökull. Its location allows organizing Skaftafell trails and viewing Fjallsárlón without returning to Vík or relying on a single night in Höfn.

Höfn
Höfn sits on a headland by coastal lagoons and serves as a base in the southeast. Jökulsárlón and Fellsfjara lie to the west along Route 1; Stokksnes offers a different landscape, with dunes and the Vestrahorn massif to the east.

Hvolsvöllur
Hvolsvöllur serves as support in the South's agricultural corridor. Seljalandsfoss is close to route 1, while Þórsmörk and Landmannalaugar require dedicated days and organized transport to the interior.

Kirkjubæjarklaustur
Kirkjubæjarklaustur is a small base between the western and glacial sections of the South Coast. The Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon lies nearby and allows for a walk before continuing along Route 1.

Selfoss
Selfoss lies alongside the Ölfusá river and serves as a road base for the Golden Circle. Kerið is near the town; Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss complete an inland circuit, with walks at each stop.

Vestmannaeyjar
The town of Vestmannaeyjar is on Heimaey, the inhabited island of the archipelago. Eldfell and Eldheimar show the transformation caused by the 1973 eruption, while Stórhöfði offers a coastal perspective to the south.

Vík
Vík concentrates services on the stretch between the black sand beaches and the glaciers of the South Coast. Reynisfjara and Dyrhólaey are on their own detours; Skógafoss and Sólheimajökull can be included along Route 1.
