About Stare Miasto w Zamościu

Zamość’s old town was planned in the Renaissance and arranges its streets around the Rynek Wielki. The arcade-lined square and the town hall form the best-known image, but the urban layout can also be read in the axes that radiate from the central space.

The ensemble recognised as a World Heritage site shows the articulation between residences, commerce and public buildings. The arcades help read the continuity of the façades, while the side streets reveal how the square relates to other parts of the former fortified town.

Walk first around the market and then follow some of the axes of the historic plan. The town hall can be observed from the outside without that implying access to all interiors. The cathedral deserves its own visit, and the circuit can be spread out with rests under the arcades.
