Get to know the place
Lublin combines a hilltop old town with the castle and its chapel of Byzantine paintings. Streets radiating from the Brama Krakowska reveal the old merchant city, with courtyards and façades from different periods.
Zamość follows a different logic: it was planned in the Renaissance and structures the visit around the square, the arcades and the town hall. The historic ensemble is a World Heritage Site and invites walking the axes that lead out from the main square as well.
Both towns are in eastern Poland and work better with overnight stays or well-planned departures. Travel between them can take longer than the map distance suggests.

The local experience
Lublin's old town occupies a hill of narrow streets and squares, with the Brama Krakowska marking one of the entrances. The ensemble reveals the former merchant city through façades, courtyards and passages arranged in a compact-scale route.
Zamość’s old town was planned in the Renaissance and arranges its streets around the Rynek Wielki. The arcade-lined square and the town hall form the best-known image, but the urban layout can also be read in the axes that radiate from the central space.
The cathedral of Zamość is part of the Renaissance city plan and stands close to the main square. The scale of the building and its interior organisation add a religious visit to the circuit of arcades and façades in the old core.
The Castle of Lublin sits on a rise next to the old town and houses a museum with different routes. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity is part of the complex and features a combination of Gothic architecture with paintings in the Byzantine tradition inside.
