About Jökulsárlón

Jökulsárlón occupies the front of the Breiðamerkurjökull, a tongue of the Vatnajökull. Chunks calve from the ice and float in the lagoon before moving through the channel toward the Atlantic. The distribution and size of the icebergs change, so each visit encounters its own scene.

The shores allow viewing the whole setting without boarding. The ice can show white, bluish tones and dark bands of sediments; these colors vary with the light and the exposed surface. The landscape includes the water, the distant glacial front and the mountains in the background.

The lagoon sits beside Route 1, west of Höfn. Boat tours are a separate activity, operating seasonally and should be confirmed before booking. Also allot time to observe the connection to the sea, without relying on the presence of animals or a specific amount of ice.
