About Fellsfjara
Fellsfjara lies by the outlet of Jökulsárlón to the Atlantic. The black sand beach receives chunks that passed through the lagoon’s channel and were returned to the shore by the sea. The presence, quantity and shapes of those fragments vary with the day's conditions.
The nickname Diamond Beach comes from the contrast between ice and dark sand. It is not a mineral formation nor a fixed display of chunks. Water, light and the sea's movement continually transform the coastal landscape.
There are access points on both sides of the lagoon's outlet, and the stopping point should follow local arrangements. Combine this visit with Jökulsárlón, reserving a separate interval to walk within the authorized beach area. Observing the sand, the sea and the channel makes sense even when there is little ice on the shore.
