About Skaftafell
Skaftafell is a visitor sector of Vatnajökull National Park. The area combines vegetation, slopes and views of glacial tongues, creating a contrast with the sediment plains that appear alongside Route 1.
The trails vary in length. The path to Svartifoss reaches the waterfall surrounded by basalt columns; another option allows views of the Skaftafellsjökull. Routes can be chosen according to the time available, without committing to the longer hikes that continue to higher parts.
Start at the visitor center to check which trails are open and plan the sequence. Viewing the ice from a land trail is different from taking part in a guided glacier activity. For the latter option, book in advance and check equipment, meeting point and duration on the official website.
