About Rauðisandur
Rauðisandur features a stretch of ochre and reddish sand in the southern Westfjords. The perceived color changes with light, moisture and tide, and the setting contrasts with the dark basalt that dominates other Icelandic beaches.
The wide-open scale of the landscape is part of the visit. The sea and channels alter the exposed sand band, so the point reached on one day may differ from what is shown in a photo. High vantage points and approaching via available access routes provide complementary views.
The road route departs from around Patreksfjörður and involves a dedicated detour. Plan the trip allowing time for the stop and return. Choose authorized routes according to tide conditions and do not expect a uniform color across the whole beach.
