A region to enjoy
at your own pace.

Tokaj gives its name to a wine-growing region that spreads across the hills of northeastern Hungary. The town lies at the meeting point of the Tisza and the Bodrog and offers two complementary readings: local history and wine culture presented in museums.

The Tokaj-Hegyalja landscape brings together several settlements, cultivated plots and working structures. A visit should choose a concrete area, rather than try to cover the whole heritage in a single outing. The route follows the valley to Sárospatak, where Rákóczi Castle forms a distinct architectural stop.

Trains help reach the towns, but access to the slopes and certain routes depends on local transport or booking. From May to October the days usually favor landscape viewing; the harvest varies by vintage and does not happen year-round.

This destination brings together 2 cities: Tokaj, Sárospatak.

Before you go

Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

May to October is usually the most favorable period for the slopes. September and October can coincide with the harvest, depending on the year. Winter from December to February is cold with short days, favoring museum visits.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

How many days to stay

Three days: one for Tokaj's museums, another for a sector of the wine landscape, and another for Sárospatak. Add an extra night if you want to reduce same-day travel.

Which city to stay in

Tokaj's center brings the two museums and the river area closer together. Sárospatak is useful for the castle and continuing along the Bodrog valley. Lodging in smaller settlements of the landscape requires checking how to arrive and depart without relying on a car.

Respect the place

Take your trash with you, follow the signs and support local businesses. In natural areas, follow the visiting guidelines.
