A region to enjoy
at your own pace.

Eger is a base in northern Hungary where castle and town are closely visible. The fortification occupies a rise above the center, while the basilica and the minaret allow comparison of buildings from different traditions. The central core works well on foot.

Hollókő expands the trip to the rural architecture of the Palóc region. The heritage concerns the ensemble of houses and their relation to the surroundings. The hilltop fortification adds a separate walk and a reading of the Nógrád landscape.

The link between the towns requires road planning. Between April and October days usually allow more walks, but traditional festivals depend on specific dates and should not be assumed as part of a daily itinerary.

This destination brings together 2 cities: Eger, Hollókő.

Before you go

Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

April to June and September to October are usually mild for towns and hills. July and August can be hot. Winter, December to February, is cold with short days. Easter, between March and April, requires checking Hollókő’s calendar.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

How many days to stay

Three days: two in Eger and one for Hollókő. With two days, reduce the castle exhibitions or leave the village for another trip; regional travel takes up part of the schedule.

Which city to stay in

Eger’s center brings together historic streets and dining, with the climb to the castle. The area between the center and the station suits those arriving by train. In Hollókő, rural lodging around the core allows extending walks, provided arrival and departure are organized.

Respect the place

Take your trash with you, follow the signs and support local businesses. In natural areas, follow the visiting guidelines.
