A region to enjoy
at your own pace.

North of Budapest, the Danube changes direction between wooded hills and historic towns. The trip can start in Szentendre, linked to the capital by the suburban train. Its center of colorful facades contrasts with the open-air rural museum outside town.

In Visegrád, the royal residence sits in the lower area while the citadel crowns the hill. The climb explains why the town needs more time than a quick stop by the river. Esztergom continues the route with its basilica and the Christian Museum.

Don’t rely on boat service as the only connection without checking operations. Summer light, June to August, extends the day; winter usually reduces time available for outdoor visits.

This destination brings together 3 cities: Szentendre, Visegrád, Esztergom.

Before you go

Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

From April to June and September to October temperatures usually make walking easier. Between June and August the days are long but it can be hot. From November to March, check the open-air museum season and river transport availability.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

How many days to stay

Three days allow one day per town. In two days, choose between the Skanzen and a longer visit to the citadel. A day trip should prioritize one town to avoid turning visits into constant transfers.

Which city to stay in

Szentendre is practical for starting close to the capital. Visegrád brings the hills close to the riverbank. In Esztergom, the center and Víziváros make walking itineraries easy, but the railway station is somewhat separate. Budapest can also serve as a base for day trips on different days.

Respect the place

Take your trash with you, follow the signs and support local businesses. In natural areas, follow the visiting guidelines.
