Budapest is organized around the Danube. Buda occupies the hillside bank; Pest stretches across the flatter side. The Chain Bridge helps link the two parts on a walking route, while the Parliament marks the river’s eastern bank.

In the upper neighborhoods, the Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church offer viewpoints and architecture. In Pest, St. Stephen’s Basilica, the Great Synagogue and the Opera allow alternating outdoor walks with interior visits. the National Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts have different offerings and require dedicated time.

The Széchenyi baths complete the trip with thermal-culture. The currency is the forint, and Hungarian names at stations deserve attention when planning routes.

Before you go

Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

April to June and September to October usually have mild temperatures for walking. July and August can be hot, with summer showers. From December to February, the cold and limited daylight favor alternating museums with outdoor walks.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

How many days to stay

Four to five days for the capital and an extra day for the royal palace of Gödöllő. In Budapest, divide your time between Buda, Pest, museums, the park and a bath. Book another outing if you want to visit the Danube Bend.

Which city to stay in

Belváros leaves the river and many of Pest’s monuments nearby. Terézváros is convenient for Andrássy Avenue and the M1 metro. Erzsébetváros concentrates food options and nightlife. On the heights of Buda, staying there brings you closer to the viewpoints but means climbing the slope to return.

Respect the place

Take your trash with you, follow the signs and support local businesses. In natural areas, follow the visiting guidelines.

Get your questions answered

Frequently asked questions about Budapest

Are four days enough in the capital?

Four days allow you to see Buda, central Pest, two museums and a thermal complex without packing everything into long walks.

Does Budapest require a car?

Metro, trams and buses serve the main visitor areas. A car is of little use for central itineraries.

How to choose between Buda and Pest for where to stay?

Pest makes it easier to combine transport and services; Buda brings you closer to the high streets and viewpoints, with more uphill on the return.

What changes in the Hungarian winter?

From December to February, days tend to be short and cold. Schedule viewpoints for daylight hours and save museums for later.

How to deal with names on signs?

Keep the Hungarian name of the station and the accommodation address. English helps with tourist services, but local names remain on transport lines.
