Get to know the place
Toruń preserves a medieval ensemble of brick on the Vistula riverbank. The square, the old town hall and the streets linked to Copernicus's memory form a compact route. The gingerbread tradition adds its own theme to indoor visits.
Bydgoszcz lies to the west and shifts the focus to the Brda river, the canals and the Island of Mills. The connection between water, former warehouses and cultural buildings gives the city a different itinerary from Toruń’s, even when both are visited on the same trip.
The voivodeship has two administrative seats, one in each city. Consider the distance between Toruń Główny and the historic centre, on opposite banks of the Vistula.

The local experience
The old town hall of Toruń occupies the center of the market square with a large brick mass and a tower. The building combines historical administrative and commercial functions and is one of the landmarks of the medieval ensemble recognized as a World Heritage site.
The Island of Mills sits on the Brda river, adjacent to Bydgoszcz’s centre, with paths, bridges and former production and storage buildings. The ensemble lets you see how water organised work and circulation in an area that later adopted cultural uses.
The House of Copernicus occupies Gothic buildings linked to the astronomer's family in Toruń's old center. The brick facades display a former merchant residence, allowing the scientific theme to be related to the urban environment where Copernicus was born.
The Exploseum occupies part of a former industrial production complex in a wooded area away from downtown Bydgoszcz. Concrete buildings and passageways between structures form the setting for a visit about technology, labor and the site’s history.
The Żywe Muzeum Piernika presents Toruń's gingerbread tradition through a participatory visit. The theme links ingredients, molds and production gestures to a practice recognized in urban culture, different from a simple stop to buy sweets.
The cathedral dedicated to St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist is part of the brick ensemble of Toruń's old town. The building has the scale of an urban church connected to religious life and the history of the medieval city, near other landmarks of the historic core.
