About Hraunfossar
Hraunfossar gathers numerous outlets of water along the edge of a lava field. Instead of a single curtain, small streams appear between rock and vegetation before reaching the river Hvítá. The horizontal layout is the feature that distinguishes the formation.
Viewing paths allow you to follow the sequence and compare sections with different volumes and shapes. The river’s color changes with light and sediments. Nearby, Barnafoss shows a different riverbed configuration, with water passing through a narrower rock channel.
Both landscapes can be seen in the same outing from Borgarnes, via roads in the Borgarfjörður valley. Allow time to follow the viewpoints rather than just photographing the first overlook. Travel through the valley can be combined with the geothermal area of Deildartunguhver.
