About Snæfellsjökull

Snæfellsjökull is the ice-capped volcano that marks the peninsula’s tip. The surrounding national park includes lava fields, coastal landforms and walking trails. The summit’s presence in the landscape depends on visibility and cloud cover.

Visiting the park does not necessarily mean going onto the ice. A circuit along the coast and on land trails allows observation of the relationship between volcanic forms, vegetation and the sea. Visitor center information helps choose areas and understand the local geology.

Allow a day for the area and pick stops according to the time you have. Summit or glacier activities require specialized arrangements, booking and specific conditions. For a first visit, travelling the coast offers an understanding of the park without attempting a mountain ascent.
