About Sólheimajökull
Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier that descends from the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. The valley displays ice, volcanic sediments and meltwater, with an appearance shaped by the glacier’s movement and change.
A walk from the car park leads to the viewing areas. The distance to the ice and the appearance of the glacier front change over time, so old photographs are not a reliable guide to the route. The contrast between the dark bands and the ice helps reveal the link between volcanism and glaciation.
Seeing the glacier from the valley is different from walking on it. ice activities require specialist guides, equipment and advance booking through the chosen operator’s official site. Those who prefer contemplation can arrange access only to the permitted on-land viewpoints.
