About Skógafoss
Skógafoss descends from a scarp that marked an ancient coastline in southern Iceland. The fall is about 60 metres high and sits in front of an open area, allowing you to take in the whole feature from the base.
A staircase leads to an upper viewpoint, from which you can see the river before the drop and part of the plain. The two viewpoints offer different impressions: below, the curtain of water and spray dominate the scene; above, the river’s fit into the terrain becomes clearer.
The site is next to Skógar, near Route 1, and can be visited on the way to Vík. Allow extra time if you want to climb the stairs. Paths that continue along the river belong to longer hikes and do not need to be included to see the main waterfall.
