About Kerið
Kerið is a volcanic crater with water collected in its interior. The slopes show reddish tones and patches of vegetation, contrasting with the lake surface. It is a more compact landscape than the large lava fields of the Icelandic interior.
The rim trail allows you to recognise the depression's shape and view the lake from different sides. Another path descends toward the water. The perceived colour of the lake changes with the light, the sky and the observer's position, and does not always match the more saturated images online.
Road access is close to Selfoss, making it easy to stop at the start or end of the Golden Circle. Choose your route according to available time and trail conditions. The visit does not require a long hike, but allow time to see the crater beyond the first viewpoint.
