About Þingvellir

Þingvellir brings together history and geology in a valley formed by diverging tectonic plates. The fissures, cliffs and water show how the terrain changes over time. Paths allow you to observe this landscape without undertaking a mountain hike.

The site hosted the Icelandic assembly from the 10th century and is part of the World Heritage. The church and the cluster of buildings in the valley help identify the historic area. The visit is not limited to a photograph of the cliff: it is worth walking the paths to understand the layout of the points.

There are different car parks and park accesses. Choose the historic sector for the first visit, allowing time for the descents and climbs between levels. Diving and snorkeling in fissures are separate activities, conducted by licensed operators and requiring advance booking.
