About Gullfoss
Gullfoss occupies a stretch of the river Hvítá where the water drops in two stages into a gorge. The appearance of the falls changes depending on the viewing point. A higher viewpoint helps understand the transition between the open riverbed and the canyon.
The water comes from a basin fed by meltwater and can look turbid. Flow, spray and visibility vary with the weather and the seasons. On sunny days the spray can create rainbows, but that effect depends on the light direction and current conditions.
The site's paths offer different perspectives, with access limited to open sections. Include the walk as part of your visit and check which paths are open when you arrive. It fits well after Geysir and does not require an immediate return to the capital.
