A region to enjoy
at your own pace.

Zadar brings together different layers of the Croatian coast on a small peninsula. The forum and the Church of St. Donatus occupy the same promenade space. At the landward entrance, the gate and defenses recall the city's fortified layout; at the seaward tip, the organ steps turn the waves into sound.

The town also functions as a base to alternate city and nature. Paklenica leads to the slopes and canyons of the Velebit. Kornati requires a sea departure, with routes and stops that should be checked before booking. They are distinct experiences, each with its own pace.

Summer months have long days, but heat can be intense. Buses serve the coast; within the peninsula the way to explore everything is on foot.

The local experience

Things to do in Zadar

Morske orgulje
Zadar · Zadar · Urban installation

Morske orgulje

The Morske orgulje are located on the seafront edge of Zadar's peninsula. The installation uses wave action to move air through pipes beneath stone steps. The resulting sound changes with the movement of the water, so the experience does not have a fixed sequence like a musical performance.

Crkva sv. Donata
Zadar · Zadar · Historic church

Crkva sv. Donata

The Crkva sv. Donata is the circular building that rises beside Zadar's Roman forum. The pre-Romanesque church is notable for its compact mass and interior organized around a central space. The visit brings two stages of the city's history together in the same place.

Kopnena vrata
Zadar · Zadar · Historic heritage

Kopnena vrata

The Kopnena vrata mark a landward entrance to Zadar’s historic center. The Renaissance gate is part of the city’s fortification system, next to the small port of Foša. The stone composition can be viewed from the outside during a walk arriving on the peninsula.

Nacionalni park Paklenica
Zadar · Zadar · National park

Nacionalni park Paklenica

The Nacionalni park Paklenica protects a mountainous area of the Velebit near the coast of Zadar. The canyons lead to an environment of limestone cliffs and mountain paths. Proximity to the sea does not mean an urban walk: the terrain and the length of the trails change the necessary preparation.

Nacionalni park Kornati
Zadar · Zadar · National park

Nacionalni park Kornati

The Nacionalni park Kornati protects part of an archipelago off the Croatian coast. Islands of limestone terrain, channels and stretches of coastline form a landscape mainly experienced by boat. The park area does not include all the islands seen when leaving Zadar.

Before you go

Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

May, June and September tend to favor the town center and regional departures. July and August are usually hotter. For boating, check the seasonal supply, generally larger from May to September.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

How many days to stay

Three to four days allow for an urban stage and the nature outings that make sense for the group.

Which city to stay in

Stay on the peninsula to explore the streets on foot or near land access points to ease luggage and parking. Before staying outside the center, check transport to the bus station and the departure port for tours.

Respect the place

Take your trash with you, follow the signs and support local businesses. In natural areas, follow the visiting guidelines.
