Get to know the place
The Kvarner bay combines an urban port, a gardened coastline, and an island accessible by road. Rijeka concentrates transport links and the Korzo streets. Above the city, Trsat offers another view of the bay and the routes that connect the sea to the interior.
Opatija has an elongated layout along the water. The promenade runs through gardens and stretches of the Lungomare, without requiring the entire length to be covered. In Krk, the visit focuses on the old streets and the castle by the sea, with other island localities reachable by road.
Still, bases call for different transport choices: buses and walking in towns, a car to expand the circuit. The northern Adriatic typically has a wet winter and long-day summers.

Rijeka is the seat of Primorje-Gorski Kotar and a gateway to the Bay of Kvarner. The pedestrian center is organized around the Korzo, while Trsat Castle sits on a rise above the city. Both ensembles show the relationship between the port, routes inland and the coastal relief.
Opatija combines historic gardens and a coastal promenade on the Bay of Kvarner. The Lungomare follows the outline of the sea, while Angiolina Park concentrates paths and vegetation near the central area. The town is experienced at a walking pace, with short stages and pauses between gardens and the waterfront.
Krk gives its name to the island and to one of its historic towns. The Frankopan Castle rises by the sea and can be visited on a walk through the old town streets. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge, allowing it to be included in a road trip around the Kvarner bay without relying on a ferry on arrival.
The local experience
The Frankopanski kaštel is located in the town of Krk, by the sea and Kamplin square. The fortification includes walls and towers that reveal the historic core’s defense. Its position allows combining the visit with the town streets and the waterfront without using a car between stages.
The Lungomare is the seaside promenade that connects coastal localities of Opatija, between Volosko and Lovran. The path follows coves, walls, stairs and tree-lined sections. You don't need to walk the entire length to understand the town's relationship with the Adriatic.
Trsatska gradina occupies a rise above Rijeka, with views over the city and the Bay of Kvarner. The fortification helps to recognize the relationship between the Rječina river valley, inland routes and the port. The visit combines the castle's structures with observation of the urban landscape.
The Korzo is the pedestrian spine of Rijeka's center. The street follows the city near the port, with historic facades, cafés and passages into the neighboring blocks. The interest of the walk lies in the urban ensemble and the relationship between daily circulation and architecture.
Park Angiolina forms a garden area in the center of Opatija, close to the waterfront. Vegetation and paths surround the villa that gives the complex its name. Visiting helps understand how gardens and leisure buildings contributed to the formation of this coastal town.

April to June and September to October are usually suitable for walks and historic centers. July and August tend to be hot. In winter, from December to February, rain and wind are more frequent.
