Get to know Buenos Aires

The province of Buenos Aires surrounds the Argentine capital, but it is a separate jurisdiction. Its capital is La Plata, a planned city with diagonal avenues, a cathedral and museums. The provincial territory stretches from the metropolitan area to the rural plains, the Tandil and Ventana sierras and the Atlantic beaches.

Tigre is a gateway to the Delta del Paraná, close to the Argentine capital. There, the landscape changes to rivers, islands and channels of the Delta del Paraná. The Estación Fluvial is a starting point for boat trips; the Paseo Victorica runs along the Luján River, and the Puerto de Frutos brings together shops and products linked to the city's commercial history.

In the interior, rural culture appears in the estancias, in work with horses and in criollo festivals. San Antonio de Areco is one of the places associated with the Argentine gaucho tradition and the November celebrations. On the coast, Mar del Plata combines urban life and beaches; further south, the seaside resorts and dunes have a different scale of occupation.

Asado, empanadas and dulce de leche are part of the Buenos Aires culinary tradition. Dolores preserves the recipe for the Torta Argentina, made of thin layers, and the coast adds fish to the regional cuisine. For those in the Argentine capital, Tigre fits into a day trip; including La Plata, the countryside or the coast requires extending the trip and considering the distances.

When to go

September to November and March to May are usually mild months for Tigre and the interior. December to February brings the humid heat of the Delta and the beach season; wind and Atlantic waters vary even then. From June to August, the coast is usually cold and windy, and the sierras have cold nights. Rainfall occurs throughout the year. In November, San Antonio de Areco celebrates the Fiesta de la Tradición.

Getting there

There are direct flights from several Brazilian capitals. Ministro Pistarini International Airport is in Ezeiza, in the province itself; Aeroparque Jorge Newbery, in the Argentine capital, is another gateway to Tigre. Compare the arrival terminal with the transfer required. The Acceso Norte and its Tigre branch lead to the Delta; RN 2 heads to Mar del Plata, RN 3 crosses the interior and RP 11 runs along sections of the coast. The journey can also start by train between Retiro and Tigre.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions about Buenos Aires

Is Tigre part of the City of Buenos Aires?

Tigre belongs to the province of Buenos Aires, not to the Autonomous City. It is one of the gateways to the Delta del Paraná and can be visited from the Argentine capital.

Is one day enough to visit Tigre and the Delta?

One day allows combining a short boat trip with the central area or the Paseo Victorica. Staying overnight in Tigre or on the islands adds time for longer routes; access to island accommodation may depend on a boat.

How to get to Tigre without driving?

The train on the Retiro–Tigre line reaches the city from the Argentine capital. There is also the Tren de la Costa, with a connection at Maipú; check the chosen service and the arrival station before planning your outing.

Can you include the Atlantic coast on the same day as Tigre?

They are different regions of the province, with long travel times between them. Set aside other days and a base on the coast for beaches and cities like Mar del Plata, instead of adding the coast to a Delta boat trip.
